A heart centered project, in the city I was born and raised in— Santa Ana, California.

It feels surreal to acknowledge it’s been 3 years since the world and life altering pandemic began.

It unexpectedly shifted many of my plans, as I’m sure it did yours, but also set forth a beautiful passion project close to my heart. While photographers around the country began porch portraits as a way to capture this unprecedented time, I thought about who had access to being photographed and who wasn’t represented. Historically I know that’s meant communities of color like mine and I wanted to challenge that, I wanted to see my Santa Ana and its unique diversity shine in its own light. The Voice of OC featured the project, interviewing a few of the families I documented this and last year along with including many photos in the article.

The outdoor gallery came to fruition through collaboration with Amigas Social Club, Mommies Unidas & The Santa Ana Business Council to support the kids friendly city initiative. The public gallery titled This is Santa Ana was on display for for one summer night in August 2021.

Outdoor Gallery 2021

The experience:

Porch portraits was a creative release for me when people weren’t feeling safe out in the world, especially booking photo sessions. This different form of photographing at a distance was the perfect way that felt safe for both families and I. The reminder of the distance we had to keep from each other was forever present and will always stay with me.

The inspiring:

Witnessing the closeness of families and people who live together made up for the distance. Seeing the multigenerational living dynamics which we rarely see anymore: the hugs, cuddles, kisses while I photographed them was a reminder of the compassion and love we all need in our home.

The Finale:

Leading up to the gallery, I was feeling stress, doubt, unworthiness like many of us do when taking on big projects. Thankfully with the support of loved ones, community, and by offering myself compassion- I was able to navigate through the unknown. I wanted to be present to take in all the beautiful images of the incredible families who let me capture their essence.

Seeing my photos on the walls was HUGE! It really hit me to watch everyones expressions and feedback. A sweet father shared through tears how much he loved the photos and students shared they were inspired by the length of this project and the perseverance it took to accomplish. It was especially moving to watch the children’s reactions to seeing themselves in photos, they reminded me that when we’re represented we GLOW!

It was so wholesome to get to watch my daughter share in my passion of photography. Watching her use my old camera to capture her own moments and share it with the children present made my heart soar.

You can still experience the digital companion ebook that included stories and quotes directly from the families documented.
